In loving memory of marsha smith

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you of the passing of our beloved supported living client and Serra family member, Marsha Smith, who passed on March 12, 2024, at 75 years of age. Marsha is survived by her brother and conservator, Doug.

For 20 years Serra Center had the pleasure of living and caring for Marsha. She first joined Serra in 2004 residing in our ICF homes where she met her dear friend, Donald, and beloved Support Coordinator, Renee (her second mother – as Marsha referred to her!).

In 2006, Marsha and Donald’s dream of living in their own apartment was realized when they were selected from a waiting list for an apartment at Lincoln Oaks, a complex for persons with intellectual disabilities. Serra team member, Renee Chatman and Kim Nguyen accompanied Marsha on her move to supported living and presently remain as care givers.

For the next 18 years while living at Lincoln Oaks, Marsha lived life on her terms. She developed a community of friends, extended family, and Cats, while receiving 24-7 care from Serra Center. I believe Marsha’s success and happiness is rooted in the bond created with her team of care givers. The selfless dedication, commitment, love, and advocacy provided by you all gave Marsha a safe environment to grow and be herself.

Marsha was a kind and loving soul who brought joy to everyone she met. Every time I’d see Marsha she had a smile on her face. She was fun and she was funny! She truly enjoyed being with people.

Marsha attended the Walpert Day Program. The combination of work and enrichment philosophies provided for Marsha to be creative while studying subjects of interest to her. Marsha loved her day program, which she attended for an impressive 35+ years!

Marsha enjoyed puzzles, drawing, coloring and painting – talents she cultivated at home and the day program, and shares with the public through her participation in Serra’s art workshop since its beginning. Next week as the art workshop commences, we will have one less participant to light up the room.

Marsha, we will miss you. And we will do our best to carry on the joy you brought to us all.
