Activities & Vacations

Rooted in the philosophy that each of our lives are shaped by the experiences we encounter, Serra Center provides numerous opportunities for the individuals we serve to enjoy and experience the world safely and comfortably.

All excursions are staffed with the ratio of one chaperon for every 3 travelers (with special arrangements for individuals who require 1:1 care). We base this on the needs of the individuals traveling, while considering mobility, capabilities, age and social skills.

Whether it’s a local festival, a Mexico Cruise, or a jaunt to the Hawaiian Islands, these adventures broaden the horizons of each individual through learning, socializing, playing and gaining independence and self confidence, while educating the rest of the world that people with developmental disabilities aren’t so different.

Serra Center Art Workshop

Art Class Participants - 2In 2011 through the collaborative efforts of the Olive Hyde Art Guild Board of Directors, an ARTSFUND Grant from the Alameda County Arts Commission and support from the City of Fremont Recreation Staff, an art workshop was created to reach out to an underserved segment of the community with respect to art instructions classes. The collaboration is the result of a 13 week painting class commencing each spring, offered to the developmentally disabled adult clients served by Serra Center.

Since the first year with nine students, the program has grown to over 22 students. The Serra Center Art Workshop is taught by City of Fremont Art Instructor, Haroon Ansary, who commented that his involvement with the students has been an eye opening experience, “I have never been in the presence of such truth, humility, kindness and love…the students are extremely self-motivated, enthusiastic and incredibly brave.”

Clients at Art Class 2The success of the program has truly been a collaborative effort of the Olive Hyde Art Guild, the City of Fremont, the Alameda County Arts Commission, the Niles Rotary Foundation and Serra Center. The collaboration has inspired and unleashed a new love and appreciation for the visual arts in our community. Each year at the conclusion of the workshop in late summer – early fall, the students’ art work is exhibited with a public reception in honor of the artists.

Testimonials

Robert at the Louvre“I went to Memphis, Tennessee;  I saw where Elvis lived and lots of other places that I’ve never been before. That is the trip that stands out most for me because it was a big and exciting trip.”

~Michelle, Serra Center Client

“I have had the pleasure of chaperoning individuals on trips that were considered their life’s dream.

One individual cried and stated, “I can’t believe I’m here, this is a dream come true.” It was a moment I will never forget.”

~Lakhena, Staff Chaperon

“As we prepared to tour the Louvre, I wondered how the great works contained here would impact the individuals in my care? Robert wouldn’t rest until he found a specific piece – ‘Where is she? I need to find her?’ he repeated as he pointed to a picture on the brochure.

When we finally reached the Egyptian Gallery, there stood a beautiful ancient Egyptian gold vase. Robert stood staring into the case mesmerized – ‘There she is…’ and that is all that was said as we stood together appreciating the beauty of this piece. My question was answered.”
